As most of you know, our firm has been in operation since 1899 when we began in San Francisco out on
Cole St providing superior specialty coffee and tea. Through all of these years we have done so as a closely-held family business.
We have managed to remain in continuous operation since the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, which
demolished our Post at Larkin St headquarters. Reborn on Polk Street in 1908, the family has worked
tirelessly to provide a customized retail and wholesale experience for all of our patrons, especially
through our final move to South San Francisco. It has been, by any measure, an extraordinary and
wonderful run for us.
Today we announce that on May 24, 2013, we are retiring and shuttering our specialty beverage
operations forever! Unable to find suitable business successors that would meet not only your standards and ours by guaranteeing
our patrons a seamless experience, we have decided closure is the appropriate choice. We are of the
school of thought that all good things must come to an end.
We humbly take this opportunity to offer our sincere thanks and appreciation for your patronage through
the years, especially those of you with a multi-generational relationship with us. Your patronage has allowed
us to provide our best efforts in offering the finest coffee and tea experience that we could. It has been an honor and
our privilege to serve all of you through the years with just a few of life's simple pleasures.

Since 1899, we at Freed, Teller & Freed (the locals call us “Freed’s”) have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to providing an excellent and comprehensive selection of specialty coffees and teas from around the world. Freed’s takes pride in providing our fresh roasted coffees and premium teas, always super-fresh and custom packed by hand. Our prices are consistently competitive because our global resources of origins and importers allows us to purchase very efficiently. Our service is dependable, friendly and knowledgeable. We're a little old fashioned perhaps, but our customers love it, especially when they need to speak with a savvy human about their order. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
A Reliable San Francisco Tradition
A San Francisco tradition since 1899, Freed’s has operated as a family business for all these years. Originally located at the edge of Golden Gate Park and soon after in downtown San Francisco, the great earthquake of 1906 razed our building causing us to relocate to nearby Polk Gulch. It was to be our headquarters for many decades, complete with underground streams and brick paved streets complimented by horse hitching posts, gas lights and colorful neighbors. Our business there focused on providing our retail and wholesale customers with carefully selected, fresh roasted coffees, special teas, herbs, spices, oils, extracts and a few related accessories. Through the decades we carefully added new found specialty items that appealed to our cosmopolitan clientele. Offerings like custom fruit preserves and English marmalades, coffee and tea making equipment, delicious European candies and sweets, imported crackers and cookies, and the ever popular Virginia, fresh-roasted peanuts made Freed's a destination point from far and near.
Environmentally Friendly Specialty Coffees, Teas and Packaging
As a one hundred ten year-old business, we know how to keep up with important tastes and trends. We operate as a virtual retailer with an environmentally sensitive view. We feature Organic, Fair Trade and Shade Grown coffees and teas produced through sustainable land use practices whenever possible. Even our world class Japanese Matcha is organic and shade grown. We also feature tea blends that focus on health consciousness like our proprietary super-charged Energi Tea™ Blend and our naturally caffeine-free fruit tisanes and herb formulas. For those who requested tea quality in convenient bags, we are now offering a selection of delicious Freed's tea in tea bag sachets in sensitive packaging. Please view our offerings and learn more about the beneficial impact these products can have on the environment. We strive to utilize environmentally friendly packaging whenever practical.
